The rabbit capture intensification plan, promoted by the Department of Agriculture, has successfully captured a total of 7,908 specimens in 17 days in the Verdú area (Urgell). This initiative, active between July 28 and August 13, has reduced rabbit density by approximately 68%, dropping from about 30 rabbits per square kilometer to around 10.
The agreement to intensify hunting was reached between the ministry and the agricultural sector, responding to farmers' demands. Actions will be extended to other areas affected by the proliferation of this species, as explained by the department.
In addition to Verdú, captures have been intensified in Aspa and Alfés (Segrià), and operations are being prepared in municipalities such as Sarroca de Lleida, Llardecans, Aitona, and Seròs, according to Jaume Feixa, director of territorial services for Agriculture in Lleida.
The pilot project in Verdú included 48 operations using various methodologies. The most effective method was nocturnal patrols with all-terrain vehicles and thermal vision, carried out by the administration's own resources, which resulted in 6,311 captures over 26 patrols. Nocturnal ambushes with thermal rifles accounted for 923 captures.
Local hunters conducted 4 nocturnal patrols, capturing 674 rabbits. Surveys using thermal cameras installed on drones indicate an average density of 9.9 rabbits/km², significantly lower than the 30.8 rabbits/km² recorded in June 2026, although the area remains on alert level.
Representatives from agricultural unions such as Unió de Pagesos, Pagesos o Conills, and Asaja Catalunya have positively assessed the results and called for the continuity and expansion of intensive actions, particularly in autumn and winter. Involvement has also been requested to address the issue in Special Protection Areas for Birds (ZEPA).
