The Department of Agriculture confirmed a second positive case of avian flu on a farm near Bellpuig (Urgell) on January 9, 2026, resulting in the immediate culling of 9,000 birds.

The new outbreak was located just three kilometers from the initial case detected in late December and was quickly identified thanks to preventive analytical tests carried out within the established surveillance perimeter following the first outbreak.

The consumption of poultry meat and eggs poses no risk to health, as insisted by the Catalan government.

Following this detection, regulations requiring the immediate culling of the 9,000 animals on the affected farm have been activated. Furthermore, the surveillance radius has been extended to ten kilometers, incorporating four additional municipalities: la Fuliola (Urgell), Bellvís (Pla d'Urgell), Linyola, and el Poal.
Biosecurity measures have been reinforced, including thorough cleaning and disinfection tasks and sanitary inspections at the new farms included in the control radius. Coordination has also been activated with the Hospital Universitari Arnau de Vilanova for the preventive monitoring of farm workers.
