Recent storms have been fundamental for water recovery. Currently, snow reserves in the main river basins of the Pyrenees are 40% above the average recorded over the last five years. This improvement is already reflected in key reservoirs, such as Rialb, which now exceeds 80% of its total capacity.
This injection of water allows the agricultural sector to move past the most severe drought episode of recent decades, experienced in 2023, when the Canal d'Urgell was forced to suspend irrigation five months early. Low temperatures have facilitated slow infiltration, significantly improving soil moisture.
“"Although I cannot say now that they guarantee the entire campaign, because we are wary after 2023, they do guarantee a large part of the campaign."
Ros added that the rains have been so widespread and general that they have provided practically a first blanket irrigation for the entire irrigable area. Therefore, the opening of the canal, which is usually done around Saint Joseph's Day (March 18), will not require the immediate rush seen in previous years.
