The capital of Urgell established May 25th as Historical and Democratic Memory Day in 2021, coinciding with the inauguration of nine Stolpersteine paving stones honoring Tàrrega residents deported to concentration camps. The Museu Tàrrega Urgell has organized various activities to keep this memory alive, starting on May 22nd with the presentation of the photography book Maybe never again by Espe Pons, which focuses on the participation of foreign women in the anti-fascist struggle.
Over the weekend, guided tours were offered at significant sites such as the Pou de Gel (Ice Well), used as an air-raid shelter during the Civil War; the cemetery of Tàrrega, which contains the mass grave of victims from the 1938 bombings and soldiers from the Mas de Colom field hospital; and the Stolpersteine route. These tours also remembered the two international brigadists buried in the necropolis, whose graves were honored in 2018, and the historical reenactments at Mas de Colom, which served as a field hospital.
The commemorative cycle will conclude on Thursday, May 28th, with the presentation of a volume dedicated to the International Brigades and the Mas de Colom hospital. This publication, part of the (Re)voltes d’Òmnium Cultural project, features four articles by local historian Jaume Ramon Solé. The articles cover the presence of brigadists in Tàrrega in 1938, the deployment of the military hospital at Mas de Colom by the XV International Brigade, and delve into the mysteries surrounding the deaths of Lieutenant William Mitchell Digges and a Polish brigadier. The event will take place at 7:00 PM at the Museu Tàrrega Urgell.
