The city of Tàrrega is preparing to commemorate the centenary of the death of Maestro Josep Güell in 2030, a fundamental figure in the promotion of culture and Catalanism in the locality.
After an extensive analysis of the life and work of Maestro Güell, it is time to reflect on his profound impact. An essential tool for delving into his thought is the critical compilation published by Quim Capdevila in 2009, within the Col·lecció Natan by the Tàrrega City Council.
More than 150 years after his birth, the Maestro's influence endures in the city, manifesting itself in traditions such as the Eixida dance or the melodies of the stick dances. It is also present when the Orfeó performs Lo mercat de Tàrrega or when walking through Sant Eloi Park and contemplating its hermitage.
The spirit of Maestro Güell is reflected in the way the language is intoned, in the feeling of belonging to the Catalan identity, and in the pride of building the country's destiny. Among his many contributions, his ability to transmit emotion through art and beauty stands out, with a passion that infected all those around him.
“
"Many told us that the idea we carry would never make a mark in such a dry land in matters of art; but we, fond of the beauties created by the great geniuses, have been scrutinizing them little by little, polishing their beautiful details so that they could reach the sublimity of the whole... because friend, working in the cold is very hard."
The ideological thought of Maestro Güell aligned with the aesthetic principles of modernism, with an idealistic vision that sought the cultural and moral transformation of his environment. Over time, he adapted this will for social regeneration to the Noucentista movement, and the creation of the Orfeó Nova Tàrrega was an example of his rigor and discipline, with the aim of creating a lasting work.
His work focused on cultivating the education of feelings, with love for art and beauty, and a moral coherence that led to the spiritualization of hearts. The Orfeó Nova Tàrrega, under his direction, mobilized more than a hundred singers, instructing them and educating their feelings.
“
"Language is the basic pillar of the Catalan soul, because the people who rediscover their language rediscover themselves."
As a staunch promoter of Catalanism, Maestro Güell always emphasized the importance of language as the foundation of Catalan identity, an idea also defended by his admired Enric Prat de la Riba in his work La Nacionalitat Catalana.
With 2030 on the horizon, Tàrrega faces the challenge of preparing to disseminate the work and spirit of Maestro Josep Güell i Guillaumet, ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire future generations.
