The National Head of Poultry for Unió de Pagesos, Jordi Vilamajó, highlighted that the balance between price and production allowed for good results during 2025, despite avian influenza. The outbreaks detected late last year, including two farms in Urgell and Pla d’Urgell, are under control, and movement restrictions are expected to be lifted on February 11.
“"The biosecurity system implemented in our farms is secured and, in case of an accident, the disease can be eradicated immediately."
Vilamajó clarified that the 27% increase in egg prices was not due to local cases, but rather to the European and global context, driven by strong demand and changes in consumption habits. Live chicken prices also rose slightly compared to 2024. However, the union expressed concern over the reduction of small farms in favor of larger operations and the lack of support for generational replacement.
Furthermore, Unió de Pagesos denounced the excessive bureaucracy and administrative pressure on farmers with the new obligation of applying ECOGAN. This regulation requires communicating data on facilities, manure management, and energy consumption to set an ammonia emission threshold, warning that the increase in costs will affect the final price for the consumer.
“"The MERCOSUR agreement, which allows products to enter the market under different conditions, is a fraud for the sector and for society."
