From Monday June 1st to Tuesday June 30th, the 7th phase of excavation is underway at the archaeological site of the Pati de les Monges, located in the former convent of the same name, in the historic center of La Seu d'Urgell.
To mark these works, the City Council, through the Espai Ermengol and Turisme Seu, has organized a series of guided tours to bring the historical secrets hidden in this space closer to the public.
The tours will take place every Saturday this June (6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th) at 7:00 PM. The meeting point will be the Plaça de les Monges, and the activity will last approximately one hour. The price is €4.50 per person, and prior registration is required via the website agenda.laseu.cat/espaiermengol/.
Through this tour, attendees will be able to learn firsthand about the recovered structures at this site, where three major phases of historical occupation have been identified: the late medieval phase, between the 13th-15th centuries, the modern phase, between the 16th-17th-18th centuries, and the contemporary phase, from the 19th century.
This year, the archaeological work is primarily focused on the open areas around the pottery kilns documented in previous campaigns. The objective is to deepen the understanding of this productive sector, identifying spaces associated with craftsmanship, comprehending the kilns' operation and chronology, and determining their period of use and relationship with surrounding structures.
At the same time, this year's excavation will allow for continued investigation of the medieval phases of the site. Given that previous campaigns already indicated the existence of levels from the 13th and 14th centuries beneath the current central area, this year aims to better define the medieval urban layout of this sector of La Seu d'Urgell. The study of new walls, circulation spaces, or possible streets that may appear will help understand the organization and evolution of this area over time.
