The Catalan Government has announced a significant increase in funding for Badia del Vallès, reaching 4.1 million euros, one million more than the previous allocation, to address the municipality's unique urban characteristics.

This decision was made public during a bilateral meeting between the Minister of the Presidency, Albert Dalmau, and the mayor of Badia del Vallès, Josep Martínez València, at the local town hall. The former mayor and current minister, Eva Menor, who has been a strong advocate for updating special funding for this municipality, characterized by its limited territorial extension, also attended the meeting.
The funding increase, representing a 7.34% per inhabitant, aims to stabilize the transfer of funds, raising the specific contribution to 4.11 million euros. This financial singularity responds to the urban characteristics of Badia del Vallès, which, with only 0.9 square kilometers, lacks space for growth and robust economic activity. Furthermore, its cadastral values are notably low, reducing IBI collection despite having one of the highest tax rates in the country.

"Badia has a unique urban singularity that makes it special; it is 0.9 square kilometers, has no possibilities or spaces to grow, lacks economic activity, and additionally, a very important factor is that all housing properties have very low cadastral values."

The new funding system, based on the 4.1 million euros, updates the 3 million euro agreement reached in 2015, which had remained frozen despite inflation. Minister Albert Dalmau emphasized that this agreement addresses a 'historical demand,' while Eva Menor highlighted that the Government is fulfilling its commitment to the city, providing a stable funding system that considers fiscal capacity and income, not just expenses. Badia's municipal budget for 2026 is estimated at 14.75 million euros.
The meeting also served to update the asbestos removal schedule from buildings. In 2021, the Generalitat, through the Catalan Waste Agency (ARC), granted a subsidy of 4.49 million for this task. Currently, phase 1, affecting 127 residential communities, has extended its execution deadline until October 13, 2027. A second phase has been announced, allowing intervention in an additional 38 buildings, with the goal for 'Badia to be the first city in Europe free of asbestos,' according to Dalmau.
Regarding housing, the Government has committed to collaborating with the local council in a working group to redefine the residential model, especially after the release of the official protection housing regime. The potential of the former school grounds will be studied to expand the public housing supply. Currently, a new block of 32 homes for residents under 35 is under construction in the municipality, which Incasòl expects to complete this year.
