The Campoamor Market no longer exists as such after its demolition was completed earlier this week. On the resulting site, a new supermarket with stalls will be built, aiming to revive the original spirit of the space. This transformation will give rise to a different concept, unique in the city, and will be integrated into a renewed environment, with the Jardins del Sud nearby.
Demolition work began at the end of July, after the last businesses had closed their doors. The next step will be the construction of the new building, which will include an underground parking lot with capacity for about a hundred spaces. The food company Consum will be responsible for the construction and operation, having won the concession for the land for 40 years and 1.5 million euros.
Residents of the area positively value the transformation of Concha Espina, Reis Catòlics, and Feijóo streets. They highlight the improvement of the environment, the renovation of the market, and the new gardens. The urbanization of the former sandy parking lot in front of the CAP Sud has also been well received. According to resident Fausto Calderón, the improvement is significant, especially for children with the new park, and he considers a place to find everything in the new supermarket to be necessary.
The Jardins del Sud, despite being fenced off by the Municipal Police, are already receiving visitors. Some residents, like Dilan Ortega, warn of the presence of litter and request supervision to keep them clean. The City Council is processing the installation of permanent fences to regulate access and close them at night, although Ortega remains hopeful for the area's future if the public collaborates in its maintenance.
The future supermarket will have a usable sales area of approximately 1,180 square meters and will include sections such as a bakery, fishmonger, butcher, and greengrocer. The main entrance will be located in a new square on Reis Catòlics street. Additionally, there will be seven stalls, an ATM, and a relational corridor, addressing the demands of the Plataforma pel Mercat Municipal de Sabadell.
