The operation, coordinated by the Central Unit for Currency Counterfeiting of the Criminal Investigation Division (DIC) of the Mossos d’Esquadra, was executed simultaneously last Monday, January 26, in Terrassa and Torelló (Osona). The action resulted in the arrest of three individuals in Terrassa and a fourth person being investigated in Torelló.
The investigation began in March of last year, when the Mossos’ Northern Metropolitan Region detected a significant increase in counterfeit currency, primarily 50-euro notes. The suspects, identified by the Central Unit for Currency Counterfeiting (UCFM), are believed to have introduced up to 26,500 counterfeit euros into the economic circuit.
During the operation, officers seized forty fake 50-euro notes, four mobile phones, and over 4,700 euros in legal tender. The detainees, who had prior records for counterfeiting and drug trafficking, face serious charges under articles 386 to 389 of the Penal Code.
This operation follows other recent actions against currency counterfeiting. Two months ago, the Mossos d’Esquadra conducted a similar major operation in Badalona, which led to the arrest of seven members of another criminal group introducing fake 100-euro notes manufactured in southern Italy.
