The MiDNI application, available for mobile devices, will allow citizens to verify their identity in person in various situations. Common uses include identification before notaries, age verification, hotel check-ins, vehicle rentals, purchasing nominative tickets, collecting medicines at pharmacies, accessing concerts, picking up courier packages, or performing procedures at Correos (Spanish postal service).
To obtain the digital ID, it is essential to have a valid physical DNI. The process includes prior registration, which can be done through the MiDNI Portal online, at Document Update Points located in National Police stations, documentation units, or in the more than 300 town halls that have a PAD. Once registered, users must download the application, enter their DNI and support numbers, create a password, and validate it with a verification code received via SMS.
The MiDNI application does not store user identity data but consults it in real-time with the DNI management unit. In case of loss or theft of the physical document, users can cancel the digital version by filing a report with the National Police.
The tool offers three data display modes: DNI EDAD (photo, name, and age verification), DNI SIMPLE (photo, name, surnames, sex, and validity), and DNI COMPLETO (all data from the physical document). After selecting the information level, a temporary QR code is generated, validated by the National Police, ensuring the authenticity of the data at the time of verification.
This March marks the 20th anniversary of the implementation of the electronic DNI, a key step in the digitalization of the Spanish administration. The MiDNI application was officially launched on April 2, 2025, one year ago, as part of this digital transformation process for electronic identity.
Despite these advancements, the city of Sant Cugat del Vallès currently lacks a service for processing or renewing DNI s or passports. Residents needing these documents must travel to nearby towns such as Terrassa or Rubí, as the National Police Station that offered this service closed in August 2024.
