The city of Sabadell has seen a major shift in its commercial identity over the last six years, with food retail emerging as the dominant sector over traditional fashion stores.

Data from the Generalitat de Catalunya shows that Sabadell currently has 2,224 commercial establishments. The fashion and footwear sector has been hit hardest, losing 113 shops since 2017, a decline of 23.6% attributed largely to the rise of online shopping.

"The pandemic was the turning point: younger customers have moved online, and we lost a lot of clientele."

Conversely, food businesses now account for 35.9% of the local market. Despite the overall decrease in shop numbers, the commerce and hospitality sectors remain vital, providing 17,005 jobs in Sabadell as of the end of 2025, according to CCVOC reports.
