The congregation, founded in 1826 by Joaquima Vedruna to serve the most vulnerable, was established in Terrassa in 1856 at the initiative of the City Council, with the aim of educating the population, especially women and girls, and providing health support.
The general director of Escola Vedruna-Vall, Ismael Perálvarez, highlighted that the initial idea of accompanying and educating people throughout their lives "has borne fruit 170 years later". The school is celebrating this Sunday at the Teatre Principal an event open to former students, teachers, and sisters of the Congregation, which also commemorates the two centuries of the organization's history in Catalonia.
The event will feature performances by former students and a special cantata performed by current students for the bicentenary. Perálvarez emphasized that the educational project, revised this year, aims to continue the formative work "throughout life", strengthening the relationship with former students, who already had a first gathering two years ago.
This celebration in Terrassa is part of the activities that all Catalan schools of the Congregation of Carmelite Sisters Vedruna are undertaking to commemorate the institution's bicentenary, which will culminate on May 22nd, Saint Joaquima's Day. The Escola Joaquima de Vedruna, in the Les Arenes neighborhood, will also open its doors on Saturday, May 16th, for visits and refreshments, promoting reunions among former classmates and teachers.
