The Generalitat de Catalunya has initiated the process to declare the Santa Maria de Toudell altarpiece as a National Cultural Interest Asset (BCIN), effectively blocking its scheduled auction this Thursday.

This legal move follows urgent requests from the Viladecavalls Town Council to protect the 16th-century masterpiece. The BCIN status is the highest level of heritage protection in the region, strictly prohibiting the artwork from leaving the territory.
Attributed to the Master of the Horse, the altarpiece is a vital piece of Vallès Occidental history. The Department of Culture is currently considering exercising its preferential acquisition rights to ensure the piece remains in public hands.
