The project, initially announced for mid-this year, planned for the construction of a nine-screen premium complex next to the Via Sabadell shopping center. This area is one of the city's main commercial hubs, featuring large retailers such as Ikea, MediaMarkt, and Leroy Merlin, in addition to various dining establishments.
According to the Sabadell City Council, the delay is attributed to a change in the project's urban planning process. The developer initially applied for a construction license for an industrial building, which was granted. Subsequently, they requested a modification to implement a cultural use, leading to the need for further review of the new license and additional information from the company.
“"The cinema development company requested a construction license for an industrial building, which was granted, and subsequently asked for a modification to implement a cultural use. This second license is currently under review, and more information has been requested from the company."
The real estate developer, AdS Retail Real Estate, expresses its bewilderment at the delay, noting that the project has been stuck for half a year. The company argues that the cinema addresses a demand from the commercial environment itself, especially the restaurant sector, which sees this facility as an opportunity to revitalize the area, particularly during evening hours.
The opening of this complex would extend the area's activity and improve mobility during off-peak hours. Its location, on the municipal boundary and close to towns like Cerdanyola del Vallès, Ripollet, or Badia del Vallès, is part of a strategy to attract audiences beyond Sabadell and consolidate the area as a regional commercial hub.
Meanwhile, Ocine, the company responsible for operating the multiplex, is currently refraining from setting a timeline and will not provide further details until concrete developments occur. This initiative reopens the debate on the actual need for a new cinema in Sabadell, which already has two complexes, and generally in the Vallès Occidental region. If materialized, the facility would increase the cinematic offering in the comarca to nearly 80 screens, placing it among the areas with the highest density of cinemas in Catalonia, second only to Barcelona.
