The couple contacted emergency services 112 on the night of Sant Joan (Midsummer's Eve), reporting that the infant was not breathing. Medical personnel attended the family's home, managed to revive the baby, and urgently transferred him to the Hospital Parc Taulí in Sabadell.
Upon arrival at the hospital, medical professionals detected symptoms consistent with abuse, prompting a police notification and the activation of child protection protocols by the Generalitat de Catalunya. The infant died on Friday from his injuries.
“"The baby suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest at home on the morning of the 25th, was attended by the SEM for 40 minutes, and "they were able to revive the child and transferred him to the hospital in Sabadell, where he received care in the pediatric ICU". The next day, however, "he died from a cerebral hemorrhage and multiple fractures"."
The investigating judge has ordered provisional, communicated, and no-bail detention for the parents for habitual mistreatment resulting in death. The couple, who only answered questions from their lawyers before the magistrate, had moved to Sabadell from Aragon two months prior.
The Department of Health has confirmed the opening of an investigation and activated all relevant protocols. Concurrently, the infant's medical history since his birth in Aragon in March is being reviewed, including visits to primary care centers and the Sabadell hospital.
This case echoes a similar incident in Barcelona last March, where the parents of a six-week-old baby were arrested for severe injuries. In that instance, the father remains in prison while a charge of attempted homicide is being considered.
