The old Manlleu Library hosted last Wednesday a summer blood and plasma donation campaign organized by the Blood and Tissue Bank. A total of 55 people visited the facilities, of whom 48 donated blood and four donated plasma. Additionally, two individuals made their first donation, and one person registered with the Bone Marrow Donor Registry.
The blood and plasma donations made in Manlleu will benefit approximately 156 patients. The Blood and Tissue Bank, affiliated with the Department of Health of the Generalitat de Catalunya, aims to reach 40,000 donations this summer to meet the needs of Catalan hospitals.
It is reminded that donating blood in cool, air-conditioned, and spacious hospital centers is important to avoid high summer temperatures. It is recommended to stay well-hydrated before donating and avoid donating on an empty stomach. The campaign also seeks to increase plasma donations, proposing an extra donation compared to the previous year, with a gastronomic and cultural incentive for those who achieve it.
Plasma donation, which is simple and can be done every fifteen days at donation points similar to those for blood, is crucial for patients requiring plasma-derived medicines and annual plasma transfusions.
