The Recooperem project, promoted by the Consell Comarcal del Vallès Occidental, celebrated its tenth anniversary in Sabadell on Thursday, highlighting the recovery of 164,000 meals for vulnerable people since 2015.

The commemoration took place at the Saló de la Torre de la Fundació 1859 Caixa Sabadell, led by communicator Xavi Coral. The event gathered institutional representatives, educators, social entities, and collective catering companies who have contributed to the project's development since its inception in 2015.

"Working from the territory allows for the development of public policies with a real impact on citizens."

Xavier Garcés · President of the Consell Comarcal del Vallès Occidental
The president of the Consell Comarcal del Vallès Occidental, Xavier Garcés, emphasized that the anniversary is not a specific milestone but the confirmation of a consolidated way of working. Garcés recalled the magnitude of the problem, pointing out that in Catalonia, more than 160,000 tons of food are wasted annually in households, an amount that could feed nearly 275,000 people.

"A better world begins with what is closest."

Marta Farrés · Mayor of Sabadell
The Mayor of Sabadell, Marta Farrés, highlighted the role of local government as a motor for social transformation, arguing that action taken from proximity, aimed at helping people, contributes to building a better society. She praised the vision held a decade ago to launch an initiative that has been sustained over time.
The Recooperem project is based on recovering surplus food from school canteens, healthcare centers, and other collective catering services. It is currently implemented in 14 municipalities in Vallès Occidental and has a network of 62 utilization centers. Between 2015 and 2025, nearly 164,000 cooked meals have been recovered and redistributed through 16 local social entities, benefiting thousands of vulnerable people.
