The Meteorological Service of Catalonia (Meteocat) has issued an alert for a significant temperature increase starting this Sunday, forecasting days of "intense heat" in the city with a danger level of two out of six. In response to this forecast, Sabadell City Council has launched the "Heat Operation," a plan that groups various actions to alleviate the impact of high temperatures during the summer months.
Key measures include strengthening the network of public drinking water points. In addition to ensuring the proper functioning of existing fountains, in collaboration with Aigües Sabadell, mobile hydration stations have been installed in prominent locations such as La Rambla, Eix Macià, Plaça de la Creu de Barberà, and Avinguda de Matadepera. All ornamental fountains and water play areas in Parc de les Aigües have also been activated to provide cooling spaces.
The network of climate shelters remains operational, with libraries, civic centers, and other air-conditioned municipal facilities serving as protection points. This year, the Ponent Library has been added, which, after improvements to its air conditioning system, can now fully function as a climate shelter. In total, there are over twenty such locations distributed across various neighborhoods, aimed at providing refuge for residents, especially the most vulnerable, from high temperatures.
Coordination with health services continues, and monitoring is enhanced through the Sabadell Red Cross, the telecare service, and the Home Care Service to detect potential risk situations and offer support during extreme temperature episodes. Shaded green spaces, municipal swimming pools, and water play areas complement this network of refuges. For municipal workers operating outdoors, preventive measures have been reinforced with the distribution of canteens and sunscreen.
