The Plenary Hall of the Sabadell City Council hosted the commemoration ceremony for the International Holocaust Remembrance Day on Tuesday, January 27, drawing a large attendance despite the location change due to rain.

The event, which is usually held at the monolith in Montserrat Roig Square, was moved indoors. It followed the theme 'Uniting Generations' established by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust and featured the group Swingcopats, as swing and jazz were musical styles persecuted by Nazism.
The importance of continuing to explain the events 81 years after the liberation of the Auschwitz extermination camp was highlighted. According to municipal data, 63 people born or residing in Sabadell were deported to the camp, 40 of whom died and 23 survived.

"Behind every name there is a family and a truncated life. Democratic memory is not just about remembering what happened but about asking ourselves if we act or remain silent, if we take a stand or look the other way."

Marta Farrés · Mayor of Sabadell
Mayor Marta Farrés called for the defense of coexistence, stating that «it is not built alone, it must be defended every day». The event was attended by representatives of victims, all municipal groups, and the great-granddaughters of one of the deportees, Eugeni Arqués Simó, Núria and Roser Basaurto, who traveled from Mexico.

"The 'Never Again' invoked by the survivors of Mauthausen in 1945 is far from being fulfilled if we observe the current conflicts affecting the lives of millions of people. The ideas that drove the Third Reich survived adapted and camouflaged in current discourses."

Joan Manel Calvo · President of Amical de Mauthausen
