Leaving behind a stable job, a good salary, and an organized life is not an easy decision. However, Verónica Guerrero and Marc Guitart, originally from Sabadell, made this determination seven years ago, radically changing their course to travel the world in a van, with no fixed deadline for their return.
“"It's hard to tell family, friends, or the company, but we were curious to see the world, and the idea of being free convinced us."
The idea did not emerge suddenly. During a trip to Hawaii, they met a person who lived completely outside the conventional system, an encounter that made them reconsider their priorities. In 2017, they began saving and left their apartment to live in the countryside, intending to leave within a maximum of five years. But by April 2019, they felt ready to start their journey.
Currently, the couple has reinvented themselves to sustain their lifestyle, living 'without luxuries' and with the help of a third travel companion: 'La Llauneta', a 1986 van with 34 horsepower. This vehicle, which rarely exceeds 70 km/h and lacks a shower or air conditioning, has become their home. Initially, they had a larger and more modern van, but opted for a more modest model to fit their budget. They state that, despite the inconveniences, they have grown accustomed to needing fewer things.
Since their departure from Sabadell, they have explored much of Europe and Asia, highlighting Iran as one of their favorite places. Recently, they crossed the Atlantic by ship to reach America with 'La Llauneta', having visited nearly 25 countries. Their plan is to continue throughout the American continent 'for several years', then travel across Africa, and finally return to the Iberian Peninsula. They do not want to impose limits or fixed dates, enjoying the freedom of not depending on anything or anyone.
To finance their trip, after exhausting their initial savings, they discovered they could live from craftsmanship, setting up stalls to sell bracelets and other handmade creations. After thousands of kilometers and numerous experiences, they assure that the decision has compensated them in all aspects of life and they have not considered returning. They encourage others to seize opportunities and overcome initial fear, as 'once you try it, you see it's not that big a deal and you can make it work'.
