Sabadell Debates Construction of New Nurseries Amid High Demand

Over 350 families were left without a place last academic year, reopening the discussion on expanding the public network in the city.

The shortage of places in Sabadell's public nurseries has reignited the debate on the need to construct new facilities, particularly in the Concòrdia and Covadonga neighborhoods, where demand is growing.

Just days before the municipal nursery open house events, the issue of available places is once again a central topic. During the previous academic year, a total of 354 families were placed on a waiting list for a spot, despite the Sabadell City Council making an additional 25 places available, distributed between the Espronceda and Calvet d'Estrella centers.

"If one has to be built, it should be in Concòrdia. It has been demanded for 20 years."

Francisco Martínez · President of the Concòrdia neighborhood association
The president of the Concòrdia neighborhood association, Francisco Martínez, has identified a municipal plot near Plaça del Voluntariat as an ideal location for a new nursery. According to Martínez, the lack of such facilities in one of Sabadell's oldest neighborhoods does not encourage younger generations to settle there.
This proposal has been echoed by the spokesperson for Crida per Sabadell, Oriol Rifer, who has also advocated for the construction of a new nursery in the Covadonga neighborhood. Rifer argues that Covadonga, a predominantly residential area, has few services, and a nursery could also benefit adjacent neighborhoods like the Centre, where 121 families were left without a place last year.
The City Council has stated that the city currently has 12 public nurseries (eleven municipal and one from the Generalitat) and that demographic evolution is being analyzed to determine future needs. However, it has been emphasized that any expansion of the network will require funding from the Generalitat. In June 2024, the municipal plenary approved a motion by Sabadell en Comú Podem to promote the construction of a facility in Concòrdia.
