The Sabadell City Council has relaunched its initiative to hire night watchmen, or night civic agents, for this summer, following an unsuccessful attempt last year due to a lack of candidates.

The proposal, initially announced in late 2024, now aims to fill four positions for civic agents and one for a coordinator to enhance coexistence and security during the city's nights. Interested individuals, who must be unemployed, can find details of the offer on the Vapor Llonch website.
Once the selection process is complete and suitable candidates are found, the new team will operate from Thursday to Sunday, between 10:00 PM and 5:00 AM, covering the peak hours of nighttime activity. Contracts will be for six months, with a 28-hour work week. The gross monthly salary for the coordinator will be approximately 1,582.90 euros, while civic agents will receive around 1,418.82 euros.

The night civic agents will also ensure that entertainment venues close on time, provide information on available public transport services, and promote respectful use of urban furniture.

The agents' duties will include mediation, preventing uncivil behavior, and assisting individuals who need support during the night. They will also coordinate with the Municipal Police and, if necessary, request the presence of emergency services such as paramedics or firefighters.
This initiative complements a reinforcement of police presence announced weeks ago, particularly in Sabadell's city center, an area with a high concentration of nightlife and where complaints about incivility have been registered, channeled by the citizen platform Soroll Sabadell. The municipal government recently reported the creation of a new unit with 14 agents and two vans to patrol on weekends.
The night watchmen model has already been successfully implemented in other Catalan municipalities. Santa Coloma de Gramenet was a pioneer in reviving this service in 2019, with a team of about eighty unemployed workers over 45 years old, active throughout the year. This initiative, promoted by Mayor Núria Parlon, has been replicated by cities such as Cornellà, Mataró, Figueres, and Esplugues de Llobregat.
