The Sant Cugat del Vallès City Council has approved a new directive to strengthen municipal census oversight this March, following the detection of over 300 irregular registrations last summer.

The local government has implemented stricter mechanisms to ensure the census reflects the city's actual population. Key changes include mandatory in-person registration or subsequent verification for residents over 16 years old. Additionally, a new IT system will detect potential overcrowding in homes.

"We want zero tolerance for fraudulent registrations. The city census must represent reality, as it determines access to services and aid."

Josep Maria Vallès · Mayor of Sant Cugat del Vallès
In the first 18 months of the current term, approximately 4,000 people who did not actually live in the municipality were removed from the records. Deputy Mayor Jordi Puigneró stated that these measures aim to end the perception that the system is easy to bypass.
