Sentmenat Bypass Controversy: Residents and Environmentalists Oppose Route

The proposed Sentmenat bypass, currently open for public consultation and objections, is facing criticism from environmental and resident groups who allege encroachment on protected areas and call for project reformulation.

The Sentmenat bypass project, currently undergoing public consultation and objection period, has drawn initial criticism from entities such as the Association for the Defense and Study of Nature (ADENC) and resident groups. These organizations argue that the informative study and environmental impact assessment lack the necessary technical rigor, and that the chosen route, alternative 3, encroaches on protected land, triples the initial length, and violates current regulations.
ADENC regrets that the planned road has undergone a "total turn" from the initial proposal, fully encroaching on protected space and creating a "call effect" for private vehicle use. Furthermore, they point out that it would run parallel to the hypothetical extension of the Quart Cinturó. Groups like Protegim l’Entorn de Sentmenat (PES) and the residents' association have supported these claims, submitting a document on July 23rd requesting the "immediate withdrawal and comprehensive reformulation" of the studies.
Otherwise, the entities threaten to exhaust administrative channels and file an administrative contentious appeal. They propose reverting to the initial idea, executing it in two phases to minimize agricultural land occupation and respect the biological connectivity zone. This shorter option would run through land already designated for development and connect the industrial areas of Can Roure and Can Clapers.
Meanwhile, representatives from the Generalitat's Department of Territory and the mayor of Sentmenat, Montserrat Rueda, defend the project's necessity. Rueda states that expert criteria have been followed and that the City Council's contributions aim to improve the route to ensure respect for the environment while securing industrial growth. The objections, according to the City Council, do not question the project but seek to enhance it before the final construction project is drafted. The debate on how to divert heavy traffic from the urban center towards Can Clapers is ongoing, with divergent interpretations on the best approach.
