The intense heatwave affecting Terrassa and the entire region has prompted the municipal government to expedite protection measures for the most vulnerable groups. Last Thursday, the launch of the "Ready for the Heat" campaign was announced, encompassing various actions to combat high temperatures both in public spaces and schools, as well as initiatives targeting the elderly and homeless.
A notable addition to this campaign is the focus on animals at the Terrassa Animal Adoption Center (CAAD). This municipal response follows the circulation of videos on social media showing shelter dogs seeking the limited shade available in their enclosures.
The council has reported that, starting this Friday, ten temporary awnings have been installed in the CAAD's paved courtyards to provide direct shade for the cages and the cat area. Additionally, existing awnings are being reinforced, as some were in a condition that posed a risk to both staff and animals.
Other implemented measures include the placement of small pools, spraying water on paved areas to cool them down, and frequent changes of water in the animal troughs. Holes have also been made in the dog kennels to improve air circulation and enhance their thermal comfort.
Concurrently, the Terrassa Municipal Police have urged citizens to remain vigilant for potential animal mistreatment. It has been reiterated that keeping pets exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods in open areas like terraces or balconies can constitute an administrative and criminal offense. The public is asked to report any suspicious situations to 092 to ensure animal safety.
