The Terrassa City Council has launched the operational phase of its new waste collection model this week in the neighborhoods of Can Palet de Vista Alegre, Vista Alegre, and Can Gonteres.

The initiative involves the installation of 75 closed containers that require digital identification to open. This system, serving 860 homes, focuses on organic and residual waste, while paper, glass, and plastic bins remain open as usual.
To assist residents, the local government distributed kits including two digital access cards per household and compostable bags. Unlike other models, these bins in Terrassa will be accessible 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

"The goal is to improve the quality of selective collection, reduce improper waste, move towards European targets, and encourage citizen responsibility."

Funded by NextGenerationEU European funds, the project allows for digital monitoring of waste disposal. This data will help the city analyze usage street by street before considering a wider rollout.
