The Cerdanyola del Vallès City Council, led by Mayor Carlos Cordón, has accused the Sant Cugat council of disloyalty over a report supporting the potential annexation of the Bellaterra EMD, reigniting a historic territorial dispute.

The debate over the future territorial status of Bellaterra, which seeks to separate from Cerdanyola and join Sant Cugat del Vallès, has escalated politically. Last week, the Sant Cugat City Council approved a technical report deeming the integration of Bellaterra and the Can Fatjó dels Aurons sector "viable," confirming that legal requirements are met.

"We will use all political, administrative, and judicial mechanisms to preserve the current territorial integrity."

Mayor Carlos Cordón appeared this Monday with councilors to denounce that his Sant Cugat counterpart, Josep Maria Vallès, had previously indicated no interest in the incorporation of the EMD. Cordón stated that the content of the report was communicated via WhatsApp during the Three Kings' Night, pointing to a direction totally opposite to previous conversations.
The territorial dispute has been ongoing since 2015, when Bellaterra residents began litigation for the secession. On June 28, 2024, the High Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) issued a final ruling forcing the Cerdanyola City Council to process the municipal boundary alteration file, a process now revived by Sant Cugat's stance.
