The inaugural event, presided over by mayor Elisabeth Oliveras, featured the reading of the manifesto "We Retire from Work, Not from Life" by representatives of the Council of the Elderly, Anna López and Carme Gálvez. The text advocates for old age with rights, autonomy, dignity, and opportunities for participation, while combating ageism and inequalities.
The manifesto stresses that work retirement should not preclude an active role in society, promoting access to lifelong learning and the contribution of experience and knowledge. This initiative is supported by the Consell de la Gent Gran de Catalunya and other entities.
“"This mural is a small tribute to their life stories and, above all, to the importance of continuing to have spaces to express themselves, be heard, and connect with others."
The Senior Citizens' Home also held a similar reading, thanking the collective's contribution for their experience and wisdom. The event included a poetry recital by the Barcelona-based poet and performer Josep Pedrals i Urdàniz, which moved the attending audience.
The Month of the Elderly will continue throughout October with an extensive program including healthy walks, tai chi and mindfulness workshops, dance activities, concerts, cinema, theater, conferences, and cultural outings. Highlights include the entities' lunch on October 6th and the tribute to nonagenarians and centenarians on October 17th, with 61 honorees this year. The closing event will be the Castanyada on October 30th.
