For weeks, the studios located at the Hospital del Tòrax have been transformed into an exact reproduction of the dining room and kitchen of El Bulli, the restaurant where one of the great masters of world gastronomy, Ferran Adrià, was born. The production has taken extreme care with all elements, from the decoration to the blackboard where ingredients were noted.
“"Fiction is the genre where I feel most comfortable, because it allows me to take stories to another level. We wanted to focus on one of the main assets we have in the country: cuisine."
The director of Gènesi, David Pujol, explained that the idea arose after shooting the documentary El Bulli, història d’un somni, which allowed him to get to know the restaurant's family closely. Pujol highlighted the exceptional nature of Catalonia in possessing great restaurants recognized worldwide, noting that “we must value how these chefs changed all the rules and the international paradigm.”
The series will consist of six chapters based on real events, although with dramatic licenses. Pujol insisted on the need for the set to be as faithful as possible, maintaining the clash between a modern, groundbreaking kitchen and a dining room reminiscent of the 1960s. For this reason, the sets are interconnected, allowing for seamless sequence shots. Even the dishes have been created by the El Bulli family itself.
“"I have had the immense luck and luxury of being able to talk to him, interview him for an hour and ask him all sorts of questions, and have him help me build the character."
Actor Miquel Fernández, who plays Ferran Adrià, detailed his preparation, although he sought to completely distance himself from parody, acknowledging that he could not ignore the chef's manner of speaking. The main cast is completed by Ivan Massagué, who plays Juli Soler, and includes Carlos Cuevas (as Albert Adrià) and Mónica López (as a culinary critic). The plot follows El Bulli's transformation and, in parallel, the fictional story of the critic Glòria Canabach.
