Waste collection data from Canovelles during 2025 reveals that the residual fraction accounts for nearly 80% of waste deposited in selective collection bins, totaling 5,483.84 tons. This figure significantly surpasses that of recyclable fractions: 487.86 tons of organic matter, 376.35 tons of paper and cardboard, 268.18 tons of packaging, and 211.5 tons of glass. Despite awareness campaigns, there is still room for improvement in waste separation by households and businesses.
Illegal dumping of bulky waste remains a significant issue. In 2025, 490.56 tons of such waste were collected, equivalent to 5,760 services. Only 1,193 were scheduled, while 4,567 resulted from uncontrolled street dumping. This situation increases service costs and complicates planning, even though the collection of furniture and old items is free by calling 900 720 648.
The annual cost of waste management services in Canovelles approaches two million euros. The treatment of the residual fraction alone cost 712,486 euros in 2025. Added to this are the collection and treatment costs for other fractions (organic, packaging, glass, paper and cardboard), which amounted to 336,432 euros, plus 58,226 euros for the organic fraction. Services for recycling centers, pruning collection, bulky waste, and the general fee for the Consortium for Waste Management of the Eastern Vallès totaled nearly 452,000 euros.
The City Council reminds residents that the waste tax exclusively covers these services, and street cleaning is funded by general municipal resources. In light of these figures, a call for citizen co-responsibility is made to deposit each type of waste in the correct bin, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable municipality.
