Coinciding with the 90th anniversary of the start of the Civil War, the Granollers Municipal Archive has made its municipal correspondence catalogs from the war period available to the public. These documents, read, described, and entered into a database thanks to a team of volunteers, offer insight into daily life in Granollers during those years.
The majority of the approximately 3,500 letters deal with everyday organizational matters such as urban planning, economy, health, education, public services, and social aid. There are also direct references to the conflict, including justifications for mobilized personnel, issuance of safe-conduct passes, confiscation of property, and solidarity campaigns.
In 1937, the correspondence reflects the growing complexity of the situation, with topics like collectivizations, requests for information on soldiers' whereabouts, organization of collections for the field hospital, rationing cards, and information on refugees.
An example of the situation is found in a decree by the then-mayor, Manuel Fabregat, which allocated municipalized rents and the corporation's gold and silver objects to the Generalitat's Ministry of Defense for war needs.
Towards the end of the conflict, in 1939, a letter from the mayor to the civil governor of Barcelona details the damage to the Congost bridge caused by the Republican retreat, which had affected the water pipes. Material was requested from Uralita SA to restore the service as quickly as possible.
