Granollers' municipal rental program will soon include 24 new homes, bringing the total to around eighty. These properties are being acquired through two main channels. Firstly, the 10% allocated to the City Council from a new private development building, amounting to 5 units. Secondly, an additional 19 homes in the same building have been secured through resources from an industrial urban development project in Coll de la Manya.
The Councillor for Housing, Sergi Fernández, explained that these 24 homes will be managed directly by the municipal office, thus offering affordable rental options to residents. This initiative is part of the council's efforts to increase public housing stock.
“"We are awaiting new funds from Europe and believe a portion will be allocated to housing, as this is not just a problem for Granollers or Catalonia."
Mayor Alba Barnusell has emphasized the importance of increasing public housing and leveraging all available avenues. She highlighted the need to develop new projects that can benefit from future funding opportunities, particularly from Europe, given that housing challenges are a shared concern regionally and continentally.
In this regard, a project for a new municipal rental housing development on Ramon Berenguer III street is already underway, which will also be managed by the City Council, with the possibility of external funding not being ruled out. Furthermore, a feasibility study is being conducted for the construction of subsidized housing on Caterina Albert street, with the study expected to be completed and the agreement approved next year.
