In total, the first three stages of the French cycling race in Catalonia, known as the Grand Départ, have generated 7,330 volunteer applications. The first stage in Barcelona received 3,299 registrations, the second, from Tarragona to Barcelona, added 2,872, and the one from Granollers to Les Angles, 1,159.
Among the participants, 64% already have previous experience in volunteer work. The age group with the highest representation is between 36 and 56 years old, although participation is intergenerational, with one participant aged 93 and another 16. Furthermore, registrations have been received from individuals from 29 different countries.
“"Hosting the start of the Tour is a historic milestone for Catalonia, through which we will project the country to the world as a top-level sporting and tourist destination."
The Minister of Sports, Berni Álvarez, highlighted the event's importance for Catalonia's international projection and encouraged volunteers to enjoy a unique experience to ensure the event's organizational success.
Volunteer teams will be organized in the coming weeks to cover the specific needs of each stage. Coordination is being carried out jointly with the Provincial Councils, municipalities, and security forces. Recently, an informational session was held in Granollers with volunteer managers for the Grand Départ, bringing together representatives from municipalities in Vallès Oriental and Moianès, with training provided by the Catalan Cycling Federation.
The volunteers' duties will include ensuring the safety of the public and participants, providing information on mobility and road closures, offering logistical support to the organization, and quickly detecting and reporting incidents to security and emergency teams, all while maintaining a professional image of the event.
