Architect Josep Maria Buqueras has released a new guide inventorying over 150 Modernist and Noucentist works across 19 towns in the Alt Camp region, aiming to promote their protection and public awareness.
The work, titled Patrimoni arquitectònic de Valls i l’Alt Camp, entre 1880 i 1956 (Architectural Heritage of Valls and Alt Camp, between 1880 and 1956), analyzes the rise of the Modernist style and its successors, which left a great architectural richness in the Tarragona demarcation. Buqueras, an architect from Reus with over fifty years of experience, served as a professor in the capital of Alt Camp for a decade.

"People must first know the heritage we have. If we know it, we can love it, and therefore, we will then be in a position to protect it."
The book, which won the first prize of the Fundació Rodon-Giró 2024 convened by the Fundació Ciutat de Valls, includes buildings from 19 municipalities, ranging from Picamoixons and Nulles to Montferri and Vila-rodona. The author highlights the importance of valuing the architects who sign the works to enhance the prestige of the heritage.
“
"There are two buildings by Jujol, the Santuari de la Mare de Déu de Montserrat and the Ermita del Roser de Vallmoll, which are the best pieces."
Buqueras also emphasizes the relevance of the Valls architects Cèsar Martinell i Brunet and Josep Maria Vives Castellet, known for the cooperatives and works such as the Casa Claravalls or the cinema in the Pati square in Valls, and the casa Lluís Domingo in Alcover. The work aims to be a basic and complete inventory to prevent the demolition of structures, a problem that occurred in the past due to lack of legislation.
