The American company International Paper announced on Wednesday its intention to close its packaging plants in Valls and Montblanc, involving a collective layoff plan affecting approximately 200 employees in the Camp de Tarragona area.

The company's decision, which follows the Montblanc City Council approving a motion supporting the affected professionals, entails the dismissal of nearly a hundred workers at each facility. The works councils have requested the suspension of “any irrevocable decision” and the establishment of a moratorium to prevent the shutdown.

"The best thing would be for a company to buy the plant to prevent families from losing income"

Rosa Rovira · Councillor for Business and Employment of Valls
Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) was among the first entities to reject the proposed layoff plan, labeling the corporate action as an «strategy of corporate speculation». International Paper justifies the closure as part of a «strategic reorganization» in Europe aimed at improving efficiency.
The affected plants are historic within the industrial fabric of the Camp de Tarragona: the Valls branch continued the legacy of Cartonatges Trilla, active for 75 years, and the Montblanc plant has been operating for over half a century. The closure jeopardizes the viability of dozens of local suppliers and auxiliary services.
