The linguist Jordi Mir i Parache gave a lecture at the Fundació Privada Reddis about the last years of Pompeu Fabra's life, from his exile in January 1939 until his passing.

The talk, titled Pompeu Fabra: de l’exili al decés (Pompeu Fabra: from exile to demise), offered a detailed overview of the master's trajectory, emphasizing his unwavering fidelity to the Catalan language despite political and cultural repression. The speaker highlighted key moments of Fabra's human and intellectual dimension, such as his refusal to join the Royal Spanish Academy and his forced departure from Catalonia in January 1939.
Mir i Parache emphasized Fabra's journey towards France, with documented stays in various locations in the Empordà region and at Mas Perxés in Agullana. These circumstances, including the possibility of crossing the border with a passport, were crucial in keeping him away from concentration camps. After years of hardship, the linguist settled in Montpellier and, finally, in Prada de Conflent, in Northern Catalonia.

"Pompeu Fabra worked until the very day of his death."

During his stay in Prada de Conflent, Fabra continued an intense intellectual and pedagogical activity until the end of his days, in December 1948. The conference presented unpublished documents illustrating his work, such as the symbolic gesture of making his will in Catalan in Andorra, his manuscript production, and linguistic dissemination through the Converses filològiques and the Catalan correspondence course.
