The Figueres City Council began the demolition of the former prison's perimeter wall this Friday, one of the first steps to transform the 5,730 square meters of the site into a new urban park.

The concrete perimeter wall of the former Figueres prison is now history, although the mural Cinc visions del paisatge empordanès by Grup 69 will be preserved. This action marks the beginning of the garden opening project, which will be adapted with children's play areas and the planting of new trees.
To speed up public access, the council announced in July an investment of 769,561.08 euros. Of this amount, 300,000 euros come from Next Generation EU funds, while the remainder is financed by the City Council's own resources.
These European funds were reallocated after an initial project to extend the bike lane in Sant Pau de la Calçada was discarded because it duplicated an existing section. The credit modification for this change of purpose was approved during the ordinary plenary session on July 3.
The adaptation of the 5,730 square meter area includes the creation of a green zone and resting area for the neighborhood, as well as improving accessibility from Plaça Vila d’Ordis and Albert Cotó and Sant Pau streets.
