The first batch of bitter orange jam from Figueres was packaged this February. This municipal initiative solves the problem of fruit falling from ornamental trees on Torres i Bages street, in the Presó vella neighborhood, while generating training and employment benefits.
The harvesting of the fruit, which previously caused street cleaning issues, was carried out by SOC workers from the Verd Urbà program. The jam was prepared by students at the Escola d'Hostaleria de l'Olivar Gran, integrating practical training into a community service project.
“"If it is liked, we will collect the others with the same purpose."
The project was driven by the Urban Services and Environment departments, led by councilors Carme Martínez and Núria Bartrolich. The City Council announced that this first yield of jam will be distributed among the residents of the Presó neighborhood.
This pilot test could be expanded, as the city has other streets and squares with fruit trees, including a dozen fig trees in public spaces and several orange trees on González de Soto street.
