The Figueres City Council will begin hiring a substitute archivist this week to reopen the Municipal Archive, which has been closed since November due to its only worker being on leave.

The cultural facility in Figueres has been inactive for the last quarter due to the medical leave of the municipal archivist, Eva Astarloa. Culture Councilor Mariona Seguranyes explained that the hiring process was delayed because the initial leaves were expected to be short-term.

"A city like Figueres deserves an archive with two people."

The Figueres City Council acknowledges a historical and structural deficit in this service. Currently, the administration is working on a future project to integrate the municipal and Alt Empordà regional archives into a new library, which would increase efficiency and staff.
A chronic issue for the Figueres Municipal Archive is the lack of online access to its collections, as it lacks a digital platform. Unlike the regional archive, this facility relies solely on the municipal budget.
