After spending the first night on the highway, the farmers reactivated their mobilization on the second day of protests. The spokesperson for Revolta Pagesa in the Girona regions, Jordi Ginebreda, assured that the intention is to maintain the blockade throughout the weekend.
“"This agreement is a collective problem because it will affect public health and the economy, among many other sectors."
In Empordà, nearly a hundred tractors continued blocking the highway in Pontós. Demonstrators improvised shelters and used caravans to spend the night, resuming activity with breakfast early on Friday.
As a declaration of intent, the farmers planted a pine tree in the middle of the highway, symbolizing that the protest will be long-lasting and that they do not expect the scheduled meeting with the Minister of Agriculture to change the situation.
Ginebreda insisted that the Mercosur agreement will impact public health (use of products banned in Europe), sustainability (increased emissions), and the local economy, which is why the protest should extend to other groups, such as doctors or teachers.
