The Ministry of Transport, alongside Adif and Renfe, presented the new Rodalies Plan 2026-2030 in Catalonia on Tuesday, involving a total investment of 8,037 million euros to modernize the railway network.

The largest allocation of the plan, amounting to 1,340 million euros, will be dedicated to maintenance and asset replacement, covering 287 new actions. This investment aims to reduce incidents and improve the robustness of a network that has suffered years of underinvestment, as evidenced by the Gelida accident and recent chain incidents.
The most ambitious structural projects total 1,840 million euros, focusing on track duplications, such as the R3 line, and urban integration projects in municipalities like Montcada i Reixac and Sant Feliu de Llobregat. Additionally, stations will receive 740 million euros for comprehensive remodelling, including accessibility improvements and the development of the new Sagrera station.
The modernization of the mobile fleet is budgeted at 768 million euros for the gradual incorporation of 110 new trains, which will allow for increased frequencies on high-demand lines such as the R1, R2, and R4. Furthermore, 25 million euros have been allocated to improve service quality and passenger information, a critical point during the recent rail crisis.
Other key chapters include the modernization of railway systems, replacing electrical interlocks with electronic ones and improving signalling and telecommunications. An investment of 637 million euros is also planned for parking tracks and workshops, an essential measure to support the increase in the new fleet.
