The Castelló d'Empúries City Council has completed the improvement of the access to the Ruiz Amado School, connected to the notary's parking lot. This action's primary objective is to increase child safety, facilitate family travel, and enhance accessibility at a point with high foot traffic during school entry and exit times.
The intervention included widening the access gate to 3.80 meters to streamline entry and exit. The exterior space has also been reorganized with a wider sidewalk next to the gate and the installation of protective fences to separate the school area from the road.
This access point has gained prominence due to the increase in people using the adjacent parking lot, necessitating the adaptation of the environment to offer a safer and more accessible route, especially for children. The project was designed following the guidelines of the Servei Català de Trànsit for school environments, prioritizing pedestrian mobility, accessibility, and pedestrian protection.
The implementation of the new access required coordination between the City Council, the Territorial Service of Education, Vocational Training of Girona, and the management of the Ruiz Amado School to properly organize entry and exit flows and ensure maximum safety.
Although the work was initially planned by the Generalitat de Catalunya, the City Council decided to advance and execute it directly to avoid delaying a priority improvement. Mayor Anna Massot highlighted that 'child safety could not wait' and that an immediate response was desired, working collaboratively with Education officials and the school.
The agreement between the City Council and the Generalitat will allow this municipal investment to be offset by other actions the Catalan Government will undertake in the municipality, maintaining the planned investment commitment. Through this initiative, the council continues to promote the improvement of school environments to create safer and more accessible spaces for the educational community.
