The Government of Catalonia and Alt Empordà city councils met this Wednesday in Espolla to formally launch the project to create the L'Albera Natural Park.

The meeting marks the beginning of a long-awaited transition from the current Natural Site status to a full Natural Park. Environmental Policy Director Marc Vilahur met with mayors from la Jonquera, Portbou, Colera, and Llançà to coordinate the protection of the massif, which stretches to the Mediterranean coast.

"We are responding to a territorial desire to highlight the value of the Albera massif, its coastline, and the valley wetlands."

This initiative fulfills a commitment by the Secretary of Ecological Transition, Jordi Sargatal. The project aims to unify the management of the area, involving forest owners and environmental groups. The legal process is expected to take several years before final approval by the Parliament of Catalonia.
