The Generalitat de Catalunya has launched the Arbres MonumentCAT mobile application, an interactive and free tool to explore the nearly 300 protected monumental trees across the Catalan territory, including new additions in 2025.

This new application transforms the way of experiencing Catalonia's rich natural heritage, offering an interactive experience for hikers and curious individuals alike. After almost a decade without new additions, 24 new monumental trees were added to the catalog in 2025, with a presence for the first time in regions such as Barcelonès and Lluçanès.

"As trees are discovered, milestones are unlocked and a visual collection is filled, turning each excursion into a small reward."

Roger Barniol · Arbres MonumentCAT Developer
The app functions as a digital field journal, where users can log their visits and track their progress. It also includes a search system and a map to locate the nearest specimens, facilitating outing planning. Roger Barniol, the app's developer, highlights that a featured tree is proposed each month to maintain interest and encourage users to complete the challenge of visiting them all.
A tree is considered monumental due to its exceptional size, age, shape, or historical and symbolic value, standing out within its species. Many of these specimens, some millennia old, have become local landmarks or hold significant scientific and ecological interest. Since 1987, these trees have enjoyed special protection, prohibiting their felling or any action that could alter their condition.

"Situations of water stress, increased temperatures, and the impact of pests that would not affect them under normal temperatures."

Marc Vilahur · Director General of Environmental Policies and Natural Environment
In the current context of climate change, the main challenges for the conservation of these trees are water stress, rising temperatures, and the emergence of pests, as explained by Marc Vilahur, director general of Environmental Policies and Natural Environment. The Generalitat also catalogs the conservation status of each specimen, ranging from normal condition to situations of decline or even already dead trees that are maintained for their historical value.
Among the notable monumental trees in Catalonia are the Faig de la Pedra in Alt Empordà, the Avet del Barranc de la Fou in Alt Urgell, the Roure de Vilardell in Ripollès, the Sequoies de Masjoan in Osona, and Lo Parot in Terra Alta, reflecting the great natural diversity and heritage value of these elements throughout the territory.
