The casteller group from Figueres, celebrating its thirtieth anniversary this year, has been chosen to deliver the inaugural proclamation for the Santa Creu Fairs and Festivals. This event will take place on Saturday at seven in the evening, marking the official start of the local festivities.
“"The Colla was born with great drive, and now, although I am no longer involved, I greatly celebrate its thirtieth anniversary and its role as town crier for the Fairs."
One of the founders and first president of the Colla Castellera de Figueres, has expressed his satisfaction with this recognition. He recalled the group's beginnings, which was formally established on September 11, 1996, following an initiative sparked by one of his children's passion for castells.
The creation of the group was a process driven by enthusiasm, seeking support among friends and acquaintances from the Centre Excursionista Empordanès and the Colla Gegantera. The first rehearsals were held at the old Escorxador, with initial support from the Figueres City Council. Consolidation came with the move to the premises in the Plaça de Toros and, subsequently, to the permanent headquarters at the Molí de l'Anguila, built during the term of Mayor Armangué.
The colla's first formal performance was in Salut de Terrades, and its official christening took place during the Santa Creu Fairs of 1997, where they debuted their purple shirt and the logo designed by Cati Palou. The godparents of that event were the Castellers de Barcelona and those from Sant Pere i Sant Pau de Tarragona. The purple color of the shirt was chosen for its association with the must and wine of the Empordà, and also for the scarves of the geganters of Figueres.
