The Spanish Army has installed two gates on a rural road connecting Sant Climent Sescebes and Cantallops, in Alt Empordà, to block access during live-fire military exercises.

The Albera military base is the only facility in Catalonia where soldiers practice with explosives and live ammunition. The decision to block a public right-of-way passing through military property has sparked protests from the Alto al Foc a l'Albera platform.

"The best security is to stop military maneuvers. When there are population centers so close, blocking the path does not solve the problem."

Dani Cornellà · CUP Deputy
While Mayor Marc Sala emphasizes the economic benefits the 400 stationed soldiers bring to local businesses, the CUP party has proposed a resolution in the Catalan Parliament to permanently close the base and return the land for agricultural and environmental use.
