Given the forecast of a decrease in donations during the summer months, the Blood and Tissue Bank has convened a special campaign in Figueres. The initiative will take place at the Creu de la Mà Civic Center this Friday, August 21, from 4 PM to 9 PM, and Saturday, August 22, from 10 AM to 2 PM. The objective is to maintain the necessary reserves to ensure supply to Catalan hospitals, as donations can drop by up to 20% during the summer period.
The campaign, under the slogan "This summer, we're fans of giving it our all", aims to achieve over 40,000 donations throughout Catalonia between July and August. The Blood Bank is intensifying its efforts in coastal and tourist areas, using spaces like civic centers and libraries to facilitate participation from both residents and visitors.
A special call is being made for plasma donation, an essential component for producing medications such as immunoglobulins. Currently, Catalonia only covers 39% of the demand for these products. Therefore, donors are asked to consider making an additional plasma donation compared to last year, as it can be donated every fifteen days.
Due to the high temperatures, the Blood Bank recommends adequate hydration before and after donation, not to come on an empty stomach, and to avoid intense sun exposure afterward. Participants in the Figueres drive must present an official identification document. The need for blood does not stop during holidays, the organizers remind.
“"The need for blood does not stop during the summer."
