54-year-old man drowns at Empuriabrava beach

The victim, a French national, died while swimming at Empuriabrava beach, bringing the total to 11 deaths on Catalan beaches this summer.

A 54-year-old man of French nationality drowned this Sunday at Empuriabrava beach in Castelló d'Empúries (Alt Empordà), bringing the number of fatalities on Catalan beaches since the start of the bathing campaign to 11.

The incident occurred at 3:04 PM, when the emergency number 112 received an alert. Two ambulances from the Emergency Medical System (SEM) were dispatched to the scene and attempted to resuscitate the victim without success. Death due to cardiac arrest was confirmed on the beach.
With this new fatality, 11 people have now lost their lives on Catalan beaches since June 15th, the official start of the bathing campaign.
According to Civil Protection, there was lifeguard service at the beach at the time of the incident, and a yellow flag was flying, recommending caution while swimming. Today, many beaches along the Catalan coast are flying yellow flags due to sea conditions.
