Hurricane-force winds of 170 km/h in Alt Empordà cause three injuries and rail closures

A severe windstorm has battered the Alt Empordà region this Sunday, with gusts reaching 170 km/h in Portbou, resulting in three minor injuries and significant infrastructure disruption.

The 112 emergency hotline received nearly 900 calls by midday, mostly from the Girona province. The Generalitat Firefighters handled over 750 incidents, focusing on removing fallen trees and securing unstable structures, such as scaffolding in Roses.
Rail travel on the R11 line was suspended between Girona and Figueres due to trees falling on the tracks. Additionally, six roads were closed, including the N-260. Three people suffered minor injuries in Salt, la Jonquera, and Garrigàs due to wind-blown debris.
Local authorities in Girona and Figueres have closed public parks and suspended outdoor activities. The Meteorological Service of Catalonia recorded peak gusts of 167.4 km/h at coll dels Belitres, prompting continued safety warnings.
